Even in the midst of\nholiday celebrations, your smile could suffer a severe injury at any time. You\nmight develop a cavity from all the extra sweets, or you might crack a tooth\ntrying to open a nut. It\u2019s important to stay prepared so that you can act\nquickly no matter what kind of holiday dental emergencies strike. Here\u2019s some\ntips for protecting your damaged teeth while waiting to see your dentist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

1. Knocked-Out Tooth<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This is probably one of the more frightening dental\nemergencies you can have, made worse by the fact that if you wait too long for\ntreatment, it might not be possible to save the tooth. Call your dentist\nimmediately to make an appointment, then rinse the tooth (taking care to only\ntouch the part that\u2019s normally visible in your mouth) and try to put it back in\nplace. You can also preserve it by placing it between your cheek and gums or by\nimmersing it in milk or a saline solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Toothaches<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

First, floss around the tooth to make sure the pain isn\u2019t\nbeing caused by a piece of food. Call your dentist if tooth pain lasts for more\nthan a couple days or becomes severe. Cold compresses and over-the-counter\npainkillers can help you stay comfortable in the meantime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Chipped or Broken Teeth<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

While some cracks are harmless and won\u2019t lead to further\ndamage, you should always have a damaged tooth examined as quickly as possible.\nGather any pieces that have broken off and bring them to your appointment. You\ncan try and stop any bleeding by holding a piece of gauze over the area. Remember\nthat a broken tooth might be vulnerable to infection, so try to keep oral\nbacteria levels under control by rinsing with salt water. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Lost Filling<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If a filling comes out, your tooth might not be in immediate\ndanger, but it\u2019s likely to be sensitive and could be exposed to infection. Orthodontic\nwax from the drugstore can fill the hole and protect the tooth from bacteria,\ntemperature, and food particles until an emergency dentist can replace the\nfilling. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Lost Crown<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Crowns are usually placed over weakened or damaged teeth; if\nyou lose your restoration, avoid chewing with the exposed tooth. Use a dab of\nclove oil to soothe any discomfort, and if possible, try to put the crown back\non the tooth with dental cement, denture adhesive, or toothpaste. (Do not use actual\nglue.) In any event, you should take your crown to the dentist so that they can\ntry and reattach it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No one expects to be visiting the emergency dentist during\nthe holidays, but when the worst-case scenario comes true, it always pays to be\nprepared and ready to react appropriately at a moment\u2019s notice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
